About Mount Ararat Wildlife Sanctuary

Mount Ararat Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Western Maine near the town of Newry, is a predominantly forested preserve managed by the Audubon Society of Maine. The sanctuary covers a significant area of varied terrain, including mixed hardwood and conifer forests, wetlands, and the notable summit of Mount Ararat. The mountain rises to approximately 2,338 feet, providing panoramic views of the surrounding Appalachian landscape. Ecologically, the sanctuary is home to an abundance of native wildlife, such as white-tailed deer, black bears, moose, and a variety of bird species including barred owls, warblers, and peregrine falcons. It serves as an important refuge for migratory birds and supports several rare plant communities. Historically, the area was used for logging before being protected for conservation and public enjoyment. Recreational opportunities are numerous and include hiking, birdwatching, photography, and snowshoeing in winter. The well-maintained trail system includes routes to the summit, accessible for hikers of varying abilities. Visitors are drawn by the sanctuary’s quiet, less-crowded environment and the chance to experience a northern forest ecosystem at close range. The sanctuary also emphasizes education and stewardship, hosting programs to engage visitors in conservation efforts. Mount Ararat’s landscape and biodiversity make it a key destination for those seeking a blend of recreation and wildlife observation in a relatively undisturbed Maine forest setting.
